Overall, I thought Nellie’s timeline was a lot more interesting. She begins cooking these recipes, discovering clues along the way with the help of her neighbour about Nellie’s life. Here, she finds a cookbook belonging to 1950s housewife, Nellie Murdoch. In Recipe For a Perfect Wife, our two leading ladies – Alice and Nellie – are connected through a cookbook.Īlice moves to the New York suburbs with her husband, into a house in which someone was known to die. Perhaps even closer – though it belongs to a fantasy series – is the connection between Snape and Harry in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, where the two characters are connected through a potions book. Also published by Legend Press, this was a huge plot point in Cassandra Parkins’ The Summer We All Ran Away, where two timelines are connected through the house they live in. He can pick them off easily, leaving only small blemishes, “the size of pinpricks-whiter and slightly firmer than the surrounding skin”. Thomas has been discovering that leaves are growing on his body. ![]() ![]() The Peculiarities also touch Thomas Thresher, a young man from a banking family. Women are giving birth to litters of rabbits, people are transforming into trees and animals, and vicious, not-quite-human Elegants are prowling the streets. ![]() A pervasive fog covers the city, and strange things are happening, known as “the Peculiarities”. ![]() ![]() Like Tsukuru Tazaki, the unnamed narrator behaves in ways that are conventionally correct. “The Strange Library” falls into the latter category, though like “Colorless Tazuru Taziki” it has a questing central character aided by a beautiful and inspiring woman. Some, like his recently published “Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage,” are realistic novels other stories are more mysterious, sometimes nightmarish and swirling with fantasy. Indeed its Japanese author, Haruki Murakami, has said that to write “you have to go down to the basement of the mind.” What he typically comes up with are narratives that are journeys of self-discovery, usually featuring young men and often an alluring and knowledgeable female. ![]() They also will note that stories that take place in a basement are likely plumbing psychological depths. Readers will quickly recognize the elements of one of the grimmer of Grimms’ fairy tales. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Blurrier lines would be more interesting.Įvaristo began her career as a poet, and several of her previous novels were written in verse, including The Emperor's Babe, about a black Roman girl in third-century London. This works best when the ideas are submerged in action: too often, Evaristo gives her characters sharply inked, directly opposing opinions to bounce back and forth, as with a dinner-table discussion on what the Bible has to say about homosexuality, or an argument about feminism in an adult education class. It's a fertile topic, and Evaristo plunges into a debate on everything from race, gender, sexuality and religion to the gentrification of multicultural London neighbourhoods. A t 74, Barrington "Barry" Walker, a Caribbean transplant to Stoke Newington in London with a church-going wife and two grown-up daughters, is "still spruced up and sharp-suited with a rather manly swagger", still working "a certain je ne sais whatsit." He's also been having a secret affair with another elderly man, Morris de la Roux, since they were both teenagers in Antigua, and coming clean to his family is unthinkable. ![]() ![]() The film, which uses Kris as its primary source, is a paean to their good deeds and a memorial to Doug, who died in a kayaking accident, dramatized on screen with animation. ![]() “Wild Life” tells the story of Douglas and Kristine Tompkins, a billionaire couple who bought up millions of acres of land in Chile and Argentina to turn into national parks. This time around, Chin and Vasarhelyi are ultimately unwilling to fully engage with the more controversial elements of their subject matter in favor of an easier triumph-of-love narrative. ![]() Their latest, “ Wild Life,” trades in many of the same themes, and yet carries little of that tension. ![]() From their Oscar-winning “Free Solo” about Alex Honnold’s risky climb to their 2021 venture “The Rescue” about the cave divers who helped save a stranded Thai boys soccer team, the couple’s brand implies both gorgeous vistas and cinematic thrills. Directors Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi have made their careers capturing humans who use nature as their playgrounds, challenged by the world’s peaks and crevices that are as dangerous as they are majestic. ![]() |
